Yangzhou University is a comprehensive university covering study, research and education of various sciences and arts. It is located in Yangzhou, a city famous for its culture with a history of 2000 years. Bounded south by the Yangtse River, the city is conveniently accessible, only 90 kilometers from Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu Province. With the national scenic spots of Shu-gang hills and the Slender West Lake, the surroundings of the university are very beautiful. Cultural objects and historic monuments can be found everywhere on and off campus. It is an ideal place for the study and research of oriental culture.

Yangzhou University is one of the first batch of institutions authorized by the State Council to confer doctoral, master's and bachelor's degrees. The University currently has a setup of 13 colleges: College of Humanities, College of Politics & Law, Foreign Languages College, College of Sciences, College of Physical Education, Engineering College, Water Conservancy & Architectural Engineering College, Agricultural College, College of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Medicine, College of Bioscience & Technology, Medical College, College of Business, and College of Tourist Industry & Cuisine. The University has 40 departments and divisions covering 46 subjects in 10 disciplines of economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture and medicine. She also possesses the Division of the Postgraduate Studies, Further Education Institute and other educational institutes. The University now has a full-time student body of 19,000 with a total number of 4,200 staff and faculty members, among them a teaching staff of more than 2,000 including 120 professors and over 600 associate professors. The University library has a collection of 2,160,000 volumes of books at present .

So far, the University has established friendly inter-institutional relationships and scientific and academic exchanges with foreign institutions of higher education and academic societies from over 10 countries, such as the United States, Japan, Canada, Australia, Germany, the United Kingdom, Chile, Russia, Belarus, Thailand, the Philippines, Korea and Ireland. The University is one of the first universities and colleges that have been accredited by the State Education Commission to enroll students from overseas.

The aim of YU is to promote oriental cultural study, to keep and develop the oriental culture legacy and to promote international cultural exchange and assimilation. With its learned experts, flexible teaching methods and reference books and materials, the Oriental Culture College has become one of the windows to show the long-standing and rich oriental culture in China.

YU offers 2-year and 4-year undergraduate courses in Chinese Language and Literature, History, Physical Education, Chinese Culinary Art, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chinese Philosophy and Chinese Culture and Art. Upon the completion of 4-year courses, students are to be conferred bachelor's degrees granted by the State Government. Master's programs include Physical Education, Literature and Art, Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature, Ancient Chinese Literature and Modern and Contemporary Chinese History. The University also has doctoral programs in Ancient Chinese Literature. Graduates from these programs can get corresponding master's or doctoral degrees. Besides the full-time programs, there are plenty of short-term training classes to meet the need of the people with different interests in oriental culture.
